BIW a finalist for Coast Guard ship contract
Bath Iron Works is one of five shipyards in the running for a contract to design and build the next generation of offshore patrol cutters for the U.S. Coast Guard.
U.S. Sens. Angus King and Susan Collins said Tuesday that the Bath shipyard survived the first cut of potential contract recipients from eight bidders to five.
The Coast Guard will seek up to three preliminary designs early next year and eventually winnow down the field to one shipbuilder, with construction of the vessels to begin in 2017.
