Bath Iron Works said Wednesday it will seek city approval to build a 940-car parking garage, improve traffic flow and add pedestrian safety features on the Washington Street side of the shipyard.
Finding parking near the shipyard has been a persistent issue for employees, BIW said in a press release, contributing to attrition and challenges in hiring new workers.
The shipyard has proposed the addition of a parking garage with space for 940 vehicles on the site of the current main parking lot at the shipyard’s north end. The garage's footprint would be half the size of the existing lot, with four levels above grade and two below. The project is targeted for completion in 2028.
BIW is also proposing expanding parking both across the street from the north end of the shipyard and at its southern end. The additional lot space should reduce traffic issues in nearby residential sections while also improving pedestrian safety and traffic efficiency.
The project includes the addition of green space, a reduction in impermeable surfaces and improvements in stormwater management.
BIW is holding stakeholder meetings with residents and groups within the city in preparation for submitting formal applications to the planning board and city council.
The shipyard employs 6,800, with more than 3,500 of them working in the main yard on the first shift. While this project will add hundreds of parking spaces, BIW said it will continue to plan for and encourage the use of remote parking lots, shuttle service, carpools, vanpools and other ride-sharing options.
Bath Iron Works is owned by General Dynamics (NYSE: GD).
