BIW could pay fines for safety violations

Bath Iron Works could pay more than $440,000 in fines for violating federal safety and health standards, the Department of Labor said Friday.

The DOL's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited BIW for 59 alleged "repeat, willful and serious" violations of safety standards, designed to protect workers against illness and injury. The office has proposed fining BIW $441,500 for the violations, which were found during a July inspection.

BIW on Friday issued a statement that said it has increased efforts to emphasize safety at the shipyard, and that most of the violations cited by OSHA were fixed within 24 hours of their discovery, according to the Portland Press Herald. BIW has until December 21 to contest the allegations or schedule an informal conference about them with OSHA, according to a press release.
