No surprises at first Plum Creek hearings

Divisions were clear during two public hearings held over the weekend on Plum Creek's development plans for the Moosehead Lake region.

While officials said they were preparing for up to 1,000 people at the first hearing held Saturday in Greenville by the Land Use Regulation Commission, only 250 showed up, according to the Bangor Daily News. Supporters of Plum Creek's plan outnumbered critics in Greenville, but the opposite was true during Sunday's hearing in Augusta, which drew roughly 300 people, the paper said.

Plum Creek is seeking to rezone 400,000 acres of land to allow it to develop nearly 1,000 house lots and two resorts on about 20,000 acres. Two more public hearings are scheduled for Dec. 15 and Dec. 16 in Portland and Greenville. LURC is expected to make a decision on the issue early next year.
