BIW fined for hazardous materials violations
Bath Iron Works has been fined $12,220 by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for alleged hazardous waste violations. The problems were discovered during a regular shipyard inspection in December.
The DEP said the shipyard failed to keep containers of hazardous materials closed, failed to mark containers and allowed materials to accumulate for more than 90 days, The Associated Press reported. BIW spokesman Jim DeMartini said most of the problems were resolved within 24 hours and that new procedures will prevent the violations from recurring.
Last month, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed fines of $171,300 for BIW for alleged repeat and serious violations of workplace safety violations. The shipyard is contesting those fines, according to The Times Record.
In other BIW news, a helicopter hangar built in Mississippi for the new DDG 1000 destroyer is being transported by barge from Ingalls Shipbuilding in Gulfport to Bath, according to The AP. The hangar took nearly two years to build.
