BIW gets $7.5M contract modification

Bath Iron Works has received a $7.5 million modification of an existing contract for work on the USS Independence, one of the Navy’s shallow-water littoral combat ships.

Naval Today reported the Bath shipyard will provide design, planning and material support services — previously contracted at $6.8 million — following the ship’s shakedown cruise. That cruise takes place to test a ship’s performance before it enters service.

The paper reported 55% of the work will take place at the Bath-based shipyard and 45% will take place at General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, Calif. The work is expected to be completed by March 2014.
