BIW nets $6.7M for destroyer work

Bath Iron Works is receiving an additional $6.7 million from the U.S. Navy for design work on the next generation of destroyers.

The award is in addition to an existing contract and will fund additional systems engineering services related to design and construction of the DDG-1000 destroyer class, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. The shipyard, the lead contractor for DDG-1000, has received other contract additions for the new destroyer class, including $8.5 million doled out in November. BIW won the contract for the first ship in 2008, and is slated to build all three ships in the line.

Last month, however, BIW laid off about 130 workers, citing the conclusion of much of the design work for DDG-1000.
