A state review has shown that supporters of a casino in Lewiston filed enough valid petition signatures to put the question before the Legislature.
Secretary of State Charles Summers said 59,095 signatures were deemed valid, exceeding the requirement of 57,277, according to the Sun Journal. Great Falls Recreation and Redevelopment LLC in January submitted nearly 75,000 signatures to the secretary of state's office. The proposal will now go before the Legislature, and should lawmakers opt not to pass the bill, it will go to a statewide referendum in November.
Investors involved in Great Falls include former city councilor Stavros Mendros, anesthesiologist Ron Chicoine and Steve Roop, owner of the Roopers stores. The casino would be located on the eight-acre Bates Mill No. 5 and include 1,500 slot machines as well as table games, according the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. In June, Lewiston voters approved selling the land to the group for $150,000.
