The Black Box on Washington Avenue in Portland, the city’s first retail space made of repurposed shipping containers, has a new tenant.
Star Cousins, a textile studio, will operate a pop-up store in the 93 Washington St. site through December.
The store takes the place of All Those Who Wander specialty coffee shop, which recently moved on when the owners decided to pursue a new opportunity.
The concept of the Black Box to provide low-commitment leases allows entrepreneurs to test a project and move on quickly to other locations or business models, the owners have said.
Star Cousins was launched in 2017 and owned by Abigail Pratt. It has a focus on handmade, one-of-a-kind textiles from around the globe that are used to locally make products.
The business will occupy an end unit of the Black Box, which opened in October with five units, each 320 square feet, geared toward retail startups.
"I am so excited to have the opportunity to use this amazing shop space for a few weeks,” said Pratt. “It's a great way to test the waters of doing retail and hopefully only the beginning. I usually work out of my home, so being able to interact with the public is very exciting to me. I hope people come in not only to shop but also to learn more about our process and the beautiful textiles we use.”
The single-story structure was built off-site by SnapSpace Solutions in Brewer and is owned by Dayton Group.
Other tenants include the Cheese Shop of Portland, a specialty food store, North Optical, a curated handmade eye wear collection shop and Campfire Studios + Mulxiply, a gift and ceramics partnership.
There’s also another textile-based business, Evangeline Linens, owned by textile industry professional Ben Ray, which sells textiles, fine art and vintage furniture.
