Black Mountain ski area to close
The Maine Winter Sports Center says it is closing the Black Mountain ski area in Rumford following a 2-1 town vote to not fund the resort as a recreational resource.
Andy Shepard, president and CEO of the Maine Winter Sports Center, said in a press release that sales were up at the mountain in the last year, but the nonprofit and its funders decided to pull the plug after a June 11 referendum vote that turned down a $51,000 allocation to keep the ski area operating through the summer and into the winter.
The group has operated the mountain for the past 10 years and last year made improvements and lowered prices in an effort that resulted in ticket sale increases of 197% and a rentals increase of 93%, according to Shepard.
The group said the closure was effective as of Tuesday.
