Blackstone opens Portland, Bangor 'innovation hubs'

Two new "innovation hubs" launched in Portland and Bangor aim to provide support to area businesses and will provide custom consulting to five companies that are developing new technologies.

Tuesday morning, Blackstone Accelerates Growth, which aims to spur business growth and innovation in Maine through a $3-million fund from the Blackstone Charitable Foundation, announced the opening of the two locations that it says will offer entrepreneurs one-on-one counseling with business growth experts, training and development, networking events, internships and coaching on how to secure funding for new ventures.

Blackstone also announced in a press release that five businesses will receive customized consulting from the innovation hubs in both cities.

At the Portland hub, Blackstone selected wind turbine manufacturer Pika Energy out of Gorham, mobile radio system developer Newfield Design out of West Newfield and Fluid Imaging Technologies Inc., a manufacturer of imaging particle analyzers, out of Yarmouth.

The Bangor hub will provide consulting to ceramic filter manufacturer Cerahelix out of Orono and oil and energy service company RH Foster out of Hampden.

A schedule of upcoming events hosted at each regional hub is available at Blackstone's website.

Through the foundation grant, Blackstone hopes to reach 250 companies in Maine, provide training to more than 400 college students in innovation and entrepreneurship and add 10,000 skilled jobs in Maine over the next 10 years.
