A new initiative has been launched in Down East Maine to bring a food processing facility to the region.
The Blueberry East Food Ventures announced yesterday it is exploring the creation of a processing and storage facility in order to add value to the state's blueberry industry, according to a press release. The Maine Coast Heritage Trust is spearheading the initiative, and other groups involved include the Down East Business Alliance, the Maine Organic Food Growers Association and Washington County Community College. The facility would allow the state's blueberry harvesters to develop new markets, and could be used by other food producers looking to package or manufacture products.
The group is conducting a feasibility study and is seeking information and feedback from growers, producers and others interested the project, according to the release.
