BNAS aircraft facility falls through

A company proposing to create an aircraft refurbishing operation at the redeveloped Brunswick Naval Air Station has backed out of the deal, citing Brunswick's unfriendly business climate.

Famed defense attorney F. Lee Bailey, who had represented Oxford Aviation before forming his own corporation to lead the initiative, has abandoned the plan, according to The Times Record. Bailey told the paper that comments made by Brunswick town councilors Ben Tucker and Margo Knight illustrated the town's "reputation for being hostile to business" and drove away potential investors. In an article published by The Forecaster, Tucker and Knight expressed concern that Bailey's venture was a cover to allow Oxford Aviation to continue with its plans despite controversy surrounding its efforts in other communities. During negotiations with Oxford Aviation, some town councilors criticized the company's failed attempt to expand in Sanford, according to The Times Record.

Tucker and Knight defended their comments and denied that Brunswick is hostile to businesses. "I firmly believe that Brunswick is pro-business and that we would have been ready to examine carefully any deal that would have come to us," Knight told the paper. Steve Levesque, executive director of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, said the group was "gravely disappointed" with the news, but hoped to attract other companies to the property.
