An effort to repair the Memorial Bridge that connects Maine and New Hampshire has been denied $70 million in stimulus funds, putting rehabilitation of the span at risk.
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced yesterday the project was not one of 50 projects selected nationwide to receive a total of $1.5 billion in Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grants, according to Seacoast Online. Without the funds, the Memorial Bridge may only remain open as a pedestrian and bicycle bridge, Kittery Town Manager Jon Carter told the news website. Maine Department of Transportation project manager Gerry Audibert told the news website that there are no other funding sources to explore for the bridge's repair.
Representatives from Maine and New Hampshire have been talking for more than a year to develop a plan to determine the future of the Memorial and the Sarah Mildred Long bridges that span the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth and Kittery, both of which are in disrepair. A joint study by Maine and New Hampshire officials is expected to be completed in June.
