The airport at the Brunswick Naval Air Station has now opened for civilian use as the Brunswick Executive Airport.
Area officials and politicians on Saturday celebrated the opening of the airport with the landing of the first private planes on the 700-acre airfield, according to the Portland Press Herald. Officials with the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority said the airport can be used by private pilots, corporate jets and companies that service or manufacture aircraft like Kestrel Aircraft, which has leased a hangar to build carbon composite aircraft. Kestrel eventually plans to hire 300 people to manufacture the Kestrel JP10, a prototype of which now sits in Hangar 6. MRRA hopes to see 80 takeoffs and landings a day at BXM, MRRA Executive Director Steve Levesque told The AP.
In February, the Navy officially transferred ownership of the airfield, hangars and two runways to MRRA for no cost through a public benefit conveyance. Massachusetts-based FlightLevel Aviation will act as the airport's fixed base operator, handling maintenance, aircraft services and refueling. The rest of the base will be decommissioned in May.
