A $3 million plan to market Maine lobster was unanimously approved by the The Lobster Advisory Council Thursday.
The Kennebec Journal reported the 11-member council approved the plan, which could be funded through higher lobster license fees. The proposal, which must still be presented to the Legislature, represents a dramatic increase from about $400,000 currently used for marketing. The new plan, presented during a time in which lobster prices are at a 30-year low, would be phased in over three years.
Lobster Advisory Council consultant John Sauve told the group that roughly 1% of a commodity's production value is spent on marketing by the average commodity group. Reaction to the plan from about 50 lobstermen in attendance was mixed.
In related news, the Maine Lobster Association recently announced its Lobster Lover's Celebration to promote the industry. Businesses supporting the lobster industry will feature lobster specials and prize giveaways through November.
