Portland Regional Chamber loses two large members
Two of the Portland Regional Chamber's largest dues-paying members have declined to renew their memberships, but say the decision is not a reflection of the organization's performance.
Unum, a Tennessee-based insurance company which employs 3,000 in the Portland area, and Hannaford, one of the state's largest employers with over 7,000 workers, both cited a review in their needs and corporate objectives as the reasons not to renew, according to the Bangor Daily News.
Both companies will remain members of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce. A Hannaford spokesperson said the grocery chain is not typically a member of regional chambers. Unum gave a similar response, saying that a chamber membership review led the company to conclude it was "unnecessary" to belong to multiple chambers.
The Portland chamber, with over 1,400 member companies representing some 64,000 workers, has seen a steady decline in dues revenue over the past two years. From FY 2009 to FY 2011, the chamber saw a 7.2% decrease in membership dues. Unum and Hannaford's dues were not revealed.
The organization draws more than 50% of its revenue from dues, which have totaled around $600,000 annually over the last few years. The chamber's overall budget is nearly $1.2 million, according to Chamber CEO Godfrey Wood.
