Boatbuilding co. opens in Eastport

Millennium Marine USA, a new boatbuilding company, is expected to open in Eastport this week, with 20 employees anticipated to be employed by the end of the year.

The Quoddy Tides reported the new company, started by Canadian boatbuilder Cory Guimond, is seeking a $100,000 Community Development Block Grant through an application by the city. If awarded, the funds would be used to fund a portion of the $264,506 in employee salary and benefits for a six-month period from April to October.

Twelve employees, who were hired from a pool of more than 30 applicants, will cross-train in all aspects of boatbuilding, according to an impact statement in the grant application.

Millennium Marine USA will work in a 75,000 square-foot former mill that was renovated with a $1.4 million grant from the Economic Development Administration. The city has waived one year of rent for the facility, citing the company’s “benefit to low- and moderate-income families,” according to the grant application.

Guimond said he is actively pursuing clients, including potential ones he is meeting with at boat shows in Maine, Maryland and New Brunswick.
