Maine has been listed No. 1 in hospital safety for the second year in a row.
The top ranking was based on 74% of Maine hospitals receiving a “A” for safety from the Leapfrog Group, an independent employer-based coalition that supports quality, safety and transparency in hospitals, as part of its Annual Safety Score Survey.
Every hospital is scored on how well patients are protected from errors, injuries and infections — mistakes that are known to kill more than 400,000 and harm millions of Americans every year.
Andrew Webber, CEO of Maine Health Management Coalition, in a prepared statement, attributed Maine’s top hospital safety ranking to its reporting initiative called “Pathways to Excellence," which provides quality and safety information on its website GetBetterMaine.org.
“That reporting encourages hospitals to maintain and improve the quality of their health care delivery,” he said.
Leah Binder, CEO of the Leapfrog Group, attributed fair reporting as a factor in Maine’s consistently high standards for hospital safety. “In states where we see some of the highest Hospital Safety Scores, we see strong public-private partnerships to promote safety," she said. "The Maine Health Management Coalition has been a leader in advancing transparency and using data to drive change.”
