Bookkeeper pleads guilty to embezzlement
A New Hampshire woman has pleaded guilty to two charges after embezzling more than $740,000 from Norway-based Grover Gundrilling Inc., her former employer.
Janis F. Woods, 65, of Conway, N.H., pleaded guilty to charges of interstate transportation of stolen checks and tax evasion in U.S. District Court, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced on Wednesday. She could face up to 15 years in prison and fines.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said, “Woods used her position as bookkeeper for [Grover Gundrilling] to issue herself 169 unauthorized checks totaling over $742,000, which she deposited into a bank account in New Hampshire” between 2009 and 2012. At a previous bookkeeping job for Conway-based VM Foods, Woods issued herself $220,000 in unauthorized checks between 2007 and 2009.
The failure to report the stolen funds on her federal income tax forms meant she evaded nearly $284,000 in taxes, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
