Boothbay Harbor shipyard lands $6M contract

The Boothbay Harbor Shipyard has landed a $6 million contract with the state of Massachusetts to restore a 120-year-old schooner.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the contract was finalized on Wednesday by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. Another shipyard, Maritime Gloucester in Massachusetts, had also been vying for the contract.

Work on the 156-foot Ernestina-Morrissey schooner is expected to begin this winter and will be finished in about two years. The restoration will allow the schooner to sail for the first time since 2004. The schooner, which is Massachusetts' official tall ship and a National Historic Landmark, was built in Essex, Mass., and launched in 1894.
