Bowdoin bans cars for freshmen

Bowdoin College in Brunswick will ban cars for first-year students starting in the fall of 2009, according to a news release from the college.

The move is part of the college's push to promote environmental responsibility and will enhance the school's sense of community for freshmen, who are required to live on campus, according to campus officials. Currently, about one in five first-year students arrive at Bowdoin with a car, which totals nearly 100 cars, according to the release.

The college offers bikes to students for alternative transportation, as well as a new shuttle service and two Zipcars available for student use.
