Bowdoin buys wind farm certificates

Bowdoin College in Brunswick is planning to collaborate with the Mars Hill wind farm to offset its energy use.

The college, which already offsets roughly 70% of its campus electricity use with voluntary renewable energy certificates, has made a three-year agreement to purchase renewable energy certificates from UPC Wind, the Massachusetts developer who owns the 42-megawatt wind farm in Aroostook County, according to a press release.

By purchasing these certificates, Bowdoin aims to compensate for the amount of nonrenewable energy used by the college and help subsidize the cost of the wind farm, according to the release.
