Bill to empower PUC gets early OK

A legislative committee yesterday voted to approve a bill giving the state Public Utilities Commission the power to withdraw Maine from ISO New England, the regional electricity transmission group that serves much of the state.

Sen. Phil Bartlett (D-Gorham), chair of the Legislature's utilities and energy committee, said the committee yesterday voted 10-2 to approve the bill. In recent years, concerns have mounted among policy makers that ISO New England's rules, policies and prices haven't been fair to Maine.

"The bill sends a clear message that this Legislature is serious about reforming ISO New England to protect Maine ratepayers or it will simply get out of the arrangement," Bartlett said in a press release.
