Bowen confirmed for top education post

Stephen Bowen, Gov. Paul LePage's former senior policy adviser, today will be sworn in as commissioner of the Department of Education.

The Senate yesterday voted 25-10 in support of his nomination, according to a press release from LePage's office. Bowen, a former teacher and state legislator, previously worked at the conservative Maine Heritage Policy Center as an education analyst. While the state Board of Education had raised questions about his administrative experience, debate in the Senate yesterday focused more on education policy than Bowen's qualifications, MaineToday Media reported. Lawmakers were largely split on party lines.

Earlier this week, 2006 gubernatorial candidate Chandler Woodcock was sworn in as commissioner of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and attorney Paul Sighinolfi was sworn in as executive director of the Maine Workers' Compensation Board. Sighinolfi previously worked for law firm Rudman & Winchell.
