Brewer builder wins $13.2M Army contract

Brewer construction firm Nickerson & O'Day has won a $13.2 million contract for continued work on a Maine Army National Guard training center in Bangor.

The construction company is already working on phase one of the National Guard's Regional Training Institute at the Bangor Armed Forces Reserve Center and is scheduled to finish that phase soon, more than two months ahead of schedule, President and CEO Karl Ward told the Bangor Daily News. The second phase, slated to begin in October and be completed during the first half of 2012, includes building dormitory, cafeteria and athletic facilities. Ward told the paper the project will employ 50 to 100 workers. The first phase of the project, also $13 million, involved building the training facility and offices.

In January, the Army National Guard gave the Maine Guard branch a $15.5 million grant to help fund construction.
