Brickyard Hollow Brewing will expand footprint with Skowhegan restaurant

Brickyard Hollow Brewing Co., which is based in Yarmouth and has five locations in southern Maine, will reach into a new territory by year's end, with a Skowhegan restaurant.

Its sixth location is planned for Skowhegan, in what was Whit's End Grill & Bar.

Work will begin later this month to modernize the interior and exterior of the building, which is at 123 Madison Ave.

The architect for the project is Falmouth-based Grant Hays Associates Inc. and the general contractor is Richmond-based Tristone Industries. There are also several local subcontractors helping with the project.

Brickyard Hollow is based in Yarmouth, but there's a local tie-in. The owners share a strong connection to the Skowhegan area. Owners Brad Moll and Rob Bolduc are both Skowhegan Area High School graduates. Now the Skowhegan natives are returning to bring their craft beer, pizza, and brew pub menu to their hometown.

"It started when Sam Hight purchased that building up there; he's been very instrumental in doing things to help revitalize downtown Skowhegan," said Moll. "He reached out to us, and we grew up there in Skowhegan, and he thought our brand would be a good fit for up there and something new and exciting for Skowhegan. We had some conversations about doing this, and it seemed like a really exciting thing for our company as well. Having grown up there, it's certainly a passionate thing for me to bring our brand up there."

The new location has gone through four different owners for over 60 years. The building was initially built and operated by Tilly and Carlton Whittemore in 1964. The Whittemore's passed the restaurant to Joel Lizzotte and Ken Hershbery, who ran a restaurant at the location from 1979-88. In 1988 the Charrier's Restaurant opened and was operated until 2010 when Whitney Cunliffe purchased the place and opened it as Whit's End. Whit's End closed at the end of September, ending a 12-year run.

"For 60 years, generations of people from Skowhegan and visitors have shared good times and great food in this building," said Sam Hight of Hight Properties LLC. "We are excited to bring on a partner in Brad [Moll] and Brickyard Hollow to continue this tradition."

Hight Properties is a fourth-generation real estate investment company that focuses on in central Maine. The investment company offers build-to-suit construction and leasing across many industries including childcare, medical, food service and automotive.

"Since moving back to the area in 2008, I have wanted to help create positive energy that is necessary to attract and retain talent," said Hight.

"The key to the health and growth of a community rests in its people. People need and seek access to good housing, education, restaurants, services and activities. Through my work with local agencies like the Chamber and Main Street, the local school district, MaineHousing, municipalities, our own businesses and other local businesses and entrepreneurs, it is clear that we have a group of leaders and neighbors focused on these initiatives and the common good. We are creating a Skowhegan that offers the best place to live, work and play. And I am proud to be a part of it."

In August, Mainebiz reported on Hight's plans for an affordable housing complex in Madison.

Brickyard Hollow, founded in Yarmouth in 2017, has locations in Freeport, Portland, Ogunquit and, in Yarmouth, the original brewery/restaurant at 236 Main St., and an adjacent pizza place. The Skowhegan location is slated to open in December.

"The goal of Brickyard Hollow is to create a hyperlocal, community-based pub where families and friends can gather for laughs or come together and support local causes while enjoying great local small-batch beer and food," said Moll. "We are excited to continue this tradition in Skowhegan."

Skowhegan has been busy welcoming new businesses over the past several months. In September, Maine Grains in Skowhegan unveiled architectural plans for its proposed new location, at 24 Court St., to be built in the adjacent lot. The new proposed location will be 17,000 square feet. Maine Grains serves bakers, brewers, chefs, and families with fresh-milled, organic, and heritage grains sourced from the Northeast.
