Brunswick Landing leader Kristine Logan is stepping down in wake of toxic foam spill

After facing criticism over a recent spill of toxic firefighting foam at Brunswick Executive Airport, Kristine Logan has resigned as executive director of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority.

Next Friday, Oct. 18, will be her last day.

Logan's decision to step down was announced late Thursday by the MRRA board of trustees.

"While the Board would much rather see Kristine continue her very effective work," the trustees said in a statement, "we respect her decision and express our sincere appreciation and gratitude for her exceptional leadership and dedication over the years."

Logan has served since January 2022 as executive director of the authority, the municipal corporation created in 2007 by the Legislature to manage conversion of the former Naval Air Station Brunswick to commercial and civilian use.

Previously she worked as director of TechPlace, a business incubator that was created on the 3,300-acre grounds, now known as Brunswick Landing. Logan also led the transition center that helped civilians at the air station begin new careers as the Department of Defense ramped it down in the late 2000s.

In August 2022, Logan was named a Mainebiz Woman to Watch.

This August, she came under scrutiny when 51,000 gallons of highly toxic aqueous film-forming foam, or AFFF, were accidentally released at the airport due to a faulty fire suppression system. The foam contained potentially cancer-causing "forever chemicals," and Brunswick residents expressed alarm about health effects from the spill and demanded Logan's resignation.

Since then, the authority has been grappling with both the environmental and public relations damage.

In its statement Thursday, the MRRA board expressed its "full confidence in Kristine's responsible handling" of the spill.

The authority's deputy director, Jeffrey Jordan, will take over Logan's duties on an interim basis until the agency hires a replacement.

Very sad to see her depart. Kristine is an amazing leader, has helped not only MRRA boldly grow but also the tech incubator TechPlace become an island of innovation here in Maine. Hard not to see her departure as a result of scapegoating for public opinion's benefit over truly enabling very capable people to resolve the pfas issues in the firefighting systems here at Brunswick Landing.
