Bucksport official suggests AIM will scrap mill
The proposed buyer of the Verso Paper mill in Bucksport will seek to scrap the property and make it available for redevelopment, a Bucksport official said Wednesday.
Bucksport Town Manager Derek Goodine told the Bangor Daily News that he learned about the plans while meeting with an executive from the subsidiary of Montreal-based American Iron & Metal Co. on Tuesday. He said the executive told him that no other companies were interested in purchasing the mill and continue papermaking operations.
An official at AIM Development told the newspaper he expects the company to announce its plans for the mill “close to the end of the year.”
Verso reached an agreement last week to sell the mill to AIM Development for $58 million, dashing hopes of papermakers and the community that mill operations could be saved.
Verso shut down its Bucksport papermaking machines earlier this month. Most of the mill's 570 employees are expected to lose their jobs when the mill closes by Dec. 31.
Adrienne Bennett, press secretary for Gov. Paul LePage, said the governor would seek to prevent the sale with “whatever options [that] may be available to him.”
