Governor-elect Paul LePage has nominated a former Husson University president and former legislator to Cabinet posts in conservation and finance.
LePage Thursday nominated Bill Beardsley as commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Sawin Millett as commissioner of the Department of Administrative and Financial Services, according to the Portland Press Herald. Millett, a former representative for Waterford, served on the Legislature's appropriations committee in the last session and has worked in the administrations of three previous governors. He is currently leading LePage's transition team.
Beardsley was president of Husson for 23 years and unsuccessfully ran for governor in this year's Republican primary. His nominatation is expected to be contentious. In a statement, House Minority Leader Emily Cain, D-Orono, cited his support of oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Maine, the construction of nuclear power plants and his questioning of the Land Use Regulation Commission as issues that could affect Democratic support for his nomination, according to the paper. The Senate must confirm both nominations.
