Budget requests come in high

Gov. John Baldacci yesterday told state departments to cut their budget requests by 10% after requests came in for $655 million more than the state can afford in its next two-year budget.

Finance Commissioner Ryan Low told the Capitol News Service that state agencies will meet with Gov. Baldacci's staff to explain their requests for the two-year budget that begins July 2009. Baldacci will make the final decision in January on which items he will recommend the Legislature fund.

Baldacci said it's unknown yet what the size of the expected budget gap will be, but predicted it could range from $300 million to $400 million, the news service reported.
