Bush declares emergency for Maine

President George W. Bush has issued an Emergency Declaration for Maine in response to last weekend's ice storm, which at its peak left more than 233,000 homes and businesses without power.

The declaration will allow Federal Emergency Management Agency funds to be used to aid cleanup and power restoration efforts, according to a press release from Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

The ice storm's effect on businesses was varied. The town of Oqunguit canceled its annual Christmas by the Sea Festivel after many businesses were left without power over the weekend, which is usually one of its busiest of the year, while Portland-area hotels and the Maine Mall experienced an influx of people whose homes were without power, according to the Portland Press Herald.
