Business lauded by L-A city officials finds new home
Downtown Handmade & Vintage has found a new home at 277 Lisbon St. in downtown Lewiston, where it will be joined by the art collective, The Hive, and a new art gallery.
“It's a way to have a big maker space, do a little bit of everything," shop owner and The Hive founder Sheri Withers told the Sun Journal.
The Lewiston-Auburn Economic Growth Council lauded Downtown Handmade & Vintage when it opened its doors in 2013 for its contribution to the small business development activity within the city’s downtown. The shop’s location at that time was the historic Ellard Building, which was built in 1881 and is known for its showcasing of the original beams and rafters.
“This is a great example of the trend you are seeing on Lisbon Street,” Economic and Community Development Director Lincoln Jeffers said in a press release at the time. “The building has been fully renovated and features a local market, artist space, yoga studio, a wellness center, and now some new retail space on the second floor. It’s this type of mixed business use that draws people to the downtown and onto the sidewalks.”
The new location is also a historic, mixed-used building, built in 1891. It includes retail, office and apartment tenants and the space also has enough room for artist’s studios and classrooms, a welcome feature for the art collective.
As reported in Mainebiz earlier this year, the City of Lewiston has been actively pursuing greater investment in downtown neighborhoods, growth in new creative sectors and economic diversity and capacity, with planners seeing great potential in the urban core surrounded by rural edges.
