Restaurant and hotel owners from Ogunquit to Bar Harbor were recognized by HospitalityMaine, and will be honored next month with the association's annual awards.
HospitalityMaine represents more than 1,000 members of the lodging and restaurant industry across the state. The trade group's annual awards, chosen by members, salute career professionals who exemplify hospitality in action, according to a news release.
“Our 2020 honorees are a distinct breed with backgrounds as diverse as their properties, from Ogunquit to Bar Harbor,” association President and CEO Steve Hewins said in the release. “Leading by example, they attract others to follow or create their own hospitality path. We salute their dedication.”
"These chefs, restaurateurs and hoteliers anticipate, adapt and respond to the changing appetites and expectations of today's guest."
This year's Lifetime Achievement Winner is the late Judy Hemmingsen, innkeeper of the Bluenose Motel, Rose Garden Restaurant, Belfast Bay Inn and Ullikana Cottage Inn. Hemmingsen, who began her career in hospitality when she and her husband, Ed, bought the Bluenose, in Bar Harbor, in 1980, died in September. She'd learned in August she would receive the award, according to her obituary.
The Hemmingsens rebuilt the Bluenose after it was destroyed by fire in 1994, and sold the motel in 2000. The Rose Garden restaurant in Bar Harbor was one of the only Five-Diamond restaurants ever in the state. After creating the Belfast Bay Inn, in Belfast, the couple returned to Bar Harbor in 2017 to buy and redesign first the Ullikana Cottage Inn.

The winners will receive their awards at the March 31 HospitalityMaine gala at the Doubletree Hotel in South Portland.
