Calais LNG requests another delay

With a Dec. 1 deadline approaching, Calais LNG has again asked state regulators for an extension to file its completed application, the fourth extension the company has requested since July.

The company last week sent a letter to the Board of Environmental Protection asking to push back its deadline until mid-January, citing the company's transition of its majority ownership, according to the Bangor Daily News. Calais LNG has been working since September to finalize an agreement with a new, unnamed investor, after GS Power Holdings LLC backed out of the project. However, earlier this month, the company did not renew its option on 330 acres near Red Beach, where it plans to locate the liquefied natural gas facility, when it expired Aug. 31. On Nov. 19, BEP Chairwoman Susan Lessard informed the company it must have the rights to the property in order to complete the application process and asked the company if it wanted to seek another extension or withdraw its application, according to the paper.

Calais LNG attorney David Van Slyke told the BEP the company is working to negotiate a reduced price for the property, but did not disclose an amount. Interveners in the case have until Dec. 6 to comment on the extension before a decision is made, the paper reported.
