Calais LNG seeks second hearing delay

Calais LNG has asked the state to again postpone hearings on its proposed liquefied natural gas terminal in order to cement a deal with new financial partners.

The company in July asked the Board of Environmental Protection to push back public hearings on the $1 billion project until Aug. 11, saying it needed time to find an investor to replace GS Power Holdings LLC, a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which backed out of the project. The BEP agreed to postpone the hearings. Yesterday, the company's lawyer sent another letter to BEP asking for a new deadline of Sept. 11 as talks with investors continue, according to the Portland Press Herald. Should the company fail to find another investor, it plans to pull its application from the state.

Opponents of the project spoke out against the request, including the Conservation Law Foundation, which argued the development firm does not have the financial ability to move forward with the project. A BEP spokesman told the paper the board would not make a decision today on whether to grant the request.
