Camden National Bank is donating $250,000 to Pen Bay Medical Center’s planned construction of a 41,500-square-foot, two-story medical office building on its Rockport campus.
The bank’s pledge, announced Thursday in a news release, comes two weeks after ground was broken. At that time, Pen Bay said 70% of the project’s expenses had been raised from donors, although it did not disclose the costs.
Pen Bay has said the building will help the 63-bed medical center, part of the MaineHealth system, keep pace with the Midcoast region’s growing population, which is straining current facilities.
In response to that growth, Pen Bay has already added 40 physicians and advanced practice providers to its staff in the past few years.
The new building will include space for a wide variety of services, including pediatrics, internal medicine, family medicine and psychiatry. The building will also provide space where specialists from the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland can meet with patients, reducing the need for Midcoast children with special health needs to travel.
Construction begins this month, and the building is expected to be ready for occupancy in late summer 2020, according to the release. Hebert Construction LLC, of Lewiston, will serve as construction manager, and the architect is SMRT Inc., of Portland.
In the release, Camden National Bank President and CEO Greg Dufour said, “We are proud to make a significant investment in Pen Bay Medical Center’s planned expansion, improving medical services for the Midcoast region, where many of our employees, customers, shareholders and community partners live.
"We believe it’s our shared responsibility to continue investing in vital, healthy communities for all.”
