Campsite trail in the works along stretch of Penobscot River
An organization called Penobscot River Paddling Trail is creating a network of campsites that will stretch 100 miles from Medway to Bucksport.
The Bangor Daily News reported that sites selected so far will be located at the Penobscot Valley Country Club, Penobscot Salmon Club, in Howland at Merrill Brook Cabins and at Penobscot River Cabins. The idea was sparked in 2013, when Penobscot River Paddling Trail President David Thanhauser of Swanville and Cloe Chunn paddled the Penobscot and realized campsites were hard to find or unavailable.
The project follows on the river’s rebirth as a result of the 16-year Penobscot River Restoration Project completed in 2016 when a natural fish bypass at the Howland Dam was dedicated. The project also included the decommissioning and eventual removal of Great Works (2012) and Veazie (2013) dams, which restored nearly 1,000 miles of habitat for Atlantic salmon and 10 other fish species that spend part of their lives at sea but return to fresh water for spawning.
Laura Rose Day, who served as the $60 million project's executive director, told Mainebiz at the time that the river restoration project was also about realizing the full potential of the region's waterfront communities, with a restored river ecosystem opening up new opportunities for eco-tourism and a revival of the region's traditional sport-fishing heritage.
