Fishermen in New England will see higher catch limits for flounder, haddock and other groundfish following an agreement with Canada.
The limits for yellowtail flounder will be increased to 2.5 million pounds, an 18% increase from 2010 and 44% more than fishermen originally anticipated for the 2011 season, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The higher limits are the result of negotiations with Canada over limits in shared waters, where Canadian fishermen have historically been allowed higher catch limits. A bill signed into law last month by President Obama called for fisheries managers to set more equitable catch limits for U.S. fishermen in grounds shared with their Canadian counterparts, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree.
In the release, Pingree said the higher flounder limit will also increase catches for other species caught at the same time as flounder, like haddock and scallop, because fishermen are barred from areas when flounder limits are reached.
