Daycare closure leaves 40 jobless

A Westbrook daycare center is abruptly closing, leaving 40 people jobless.

Lollipop Lane Educare, which serves 220 children, will close today, according to Portland news station WGME-13. Owner AnneMarie Hebert informed parents of the decision yesterday, and said she can no longer afford to stay in business. Hebert told the news station the center has been affected by reduced reimbursements from the state and some families' inabilities to pay their tuitions, and that her attempts to find another building with cheaper rent were unsuccessful.

Hebert said she made the decision to close when she had to make a choice between paying her employees or her electricity bill. The center will hold a forum with other childcare providers Saturday to help parents transition to new facilities.
