Carrabassett Valley seeks annexation

Selectmen in Carrabassett Valley yesterday voted to pursue the annexation of a portion of Redington Township where a wind farm has been proposed.

The annexed land would be home to a 30-turbine, community-owned wind farm on Redington Pond Range and Black Nubble Mountain proposed by Yarmouth-based Endless Energy Corp., according to the Sun Journal in Lewiston. The proposed wind farm is similar to one Endless Energy has been trying to build for several years, but which the Land Use Regulation Commission rejected in 2007. The Sugarloaf Community Wind Farm would provide Carrabassett Valley with 50% savings in energy costs, add $144 million to the tax base and allow Sugarloaf and Sunday River ski resorts to save $40 million over the life of the 15-year contract, the paper reported.

The annexation would require the state Legislature to pass special legislation, which yesterday's vote pursues, but the decision would ultimately be subject to local voter approval.
