Casella extends peace offering to Biddeford

After Biddeford Mayor Joanne Twomey had twice asked the president of Casella Waste Systems to meet with her, Phil Larkin has at last invited Twomey to see him.

Twomey has been adamant that Casella's trash incinerator in town be closed, seeing it as an obstacle to the city's revitalization and downtown development, according to a press release from her office. A year ago, Biddeford signed a five-year contract with Casella in which both parties pledged to work cooperatively to close the incinerator, which is known as the Maine Energy Recovery Company, or MERC. Twomey sent Larkin a letter in April asking for a meeting, and when he declined, she sent a second letter in May.

Earlier this week, Larkin wrote to Twomey inviting her and her associates to meet with him in Casella's Rutland, Vt., headquarters. He wrote, "I look forward to meeting you, and furthering a long-term relationship between your town and Casella," according to the release.
