Navy hires NY firm for BNAS cleanup

Environmental cleanup at the Brunswick Naval Air Station can begin now that the Navy has hired a Buffalo, N.Y.-based company to draft a environmental assessment of the property.

The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, the organization charged with developing a reuse plan for the base, announced at a meeting on Tuesday that the Navy had contracted with Ecology and Environment Inc. to oversee cleanup efforts, according to The Times Record. The authority had expected the Navy to issue the contract for the year-long cleanup assessment last winter, but Navy officials delayed the contract due to budget and workload constraints.

Ecology and Environment Inc. will develop an environmental impact statement and an environmental assessment, which is required in order for the base property to be transferred from the Navy to the town once the base closes in 2011, according to the paper.
