Cash-flow issue ends fight against Amtrak facility

The group opposing the $12.7 million Amtrak maintenance and layover facility now under construction off Church Road in Brunswick has missed its deadline for challenging the facility’s stormwater permit in court.

The Forecaster reported that Brunswick West Neighborhood Coalition ran out of money to continue the appeal process and won’t be pursuing the matter any further.

Consigli Construction of Portland is the design-build contractor for the 60,000-square-foot layover facility, which is expected to be completed in September.

The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority’s plans for the layover facility were approved in November by the Board of Environmental Protection, which was the final regulatory hurdle for the project that will allow Amtrak to store and service passenger rail trains used by its Downeaster service.

Once the facility is completed, NNEPRA also said it plans to start operating an additional daily round-trip between Brunswick and Boston.
