Casino backers push plan

The Las Vegas developers pushing to build a casino in Oxford County recently told an editorial board at the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel that the casino would draw tourists much like two of the state's top destinations, Bar Harbor and Old Orchard Beach.

Dean Harrold, vice chairman of Las Vegas-based Olympia Gaming, and Pat LaMarche, spokeswoman for the casino campaign, promised that the casino, which will be called Oxford Highlands, will create 800 jobs in western Maine with an average salary of $35,000, with benefits. The casino will give 39% of its proceeds to the state, 2% to the town in which it is located, and 1% to Oxford County. LaMarche said the location of the proposed casino will be announced within 10 days.

Olympia Gaming, the gaming development subsidiary of the Olympia Group, earlier this month purchased Evergreen Mountain Enterprises LLC from Seth Carey, the Rumford lawyer who started the campaign to locate a casino in Oxford County.

On Nov. 4, statewide voters will be asked whether they want to allow Olympia Gaming to open a casino somewhere in Oxford County.
