The Secretary of State's office has certified enough signatures to put a proposed Oxford County casino on the November ballot.
Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap certified 79,731 signatures collected by Black Bear Entertainment, more than the 55,087 needed to put the proposal before voters on Nov. 2, according to a press release from the company. Black Bear Entertainment is proposing a four-season resort casino in the town of Oxford, and in December submitted more than 100,000 signatures. The group is currently negotiating an option to buy the harness racing track at Oxford County Fairgrounds and lease it back to fair organizers, per a requirement of proposed legislation to allow the casino.
In related news, Lewiston city councilors approved putting a casino proposal to a citywide vote in June, according to the Sun Journal. Great Falls Recreation and Redevelopment LLC has proposed paying the city $150,000 as an option to buy the land beneath the Bates Mill No. 5, which is slated for demolition.
