Organizers of three separate gambling proposals have agreed to put their measures before voters in a single ballot question in November.
The agreement, reached by proponents of an Oxford County resort casino, the Passamaquoddy Tribe and Hollywood Slots, still must win legislative approval. The Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee could vote on the measure as soon as today, according to the Bangor Daily News.
If approved by the full Legislature, voters would be asked to authorize: a four-season resort in Oxford featuring slot machines and table games plus a hotel, convention center and restaurant; up to 500 slot machines and 20 table games at a Washington County racino, built within 30 miles of the two Passamaquoddy reservations; and the addition of table games at Hollywood Slots in Bangor.
Black Bear Entertainment, the group behind the Oxford County proposal, would also put its original proposal before voters as a separate measure. Spokesman Peter Martin said Black Bear would back out of the three-party agreement and move forward with its plan for a resort casino if the Legislature alters its proposal, the Sun Journal reported.
The agreement emerged Wednesday, a week after Passamaquoddy leaders questioned the fairness of potentially allowing slots and table games in Oxford County, according to the Bangor Daily News. Representatives of Penn National Gaming, which owns Hollywood Slots in Bangor, had also urged lawmakers to reject Black Bear Entertainment's Oxford proposal, the paper reported.
