CEO survey ranks Maine No. 30 for business

While Forbes magazine has continually called Maine one of the worst states for business, not all outside observers appear to agree. A recently released survey of more than 500 CEOs across the country has ranked Maine as the 30th best state for business.

What’s more, Maine actually moved up the ranks by six points from last year, according to Chief Executive magazine’s 11th annual Best and Worst States for Business survey. The survey ranks states based on taxes and regulations, workforce quality and living environment, which includes considerations for education quality and cost of living, among other factors.

The survey ranked Texas and Florida as the country’s two best states for business, and New York and California as the country’s two worst.

“The results of our 11th annual survey clearly show that CEOs favor states that foster growth through progressive business development programs, low taxes and a quality living environment,” the magazine said in its survey.

Using a five-star rating system, the survey gave Maine two-and-a-half stars for taxes and regulations, three stars for workforce quality and three-and-a-half stars for living environment.

“Recent sales tax increases have had a detrimental impact on companies’ ability to thrive in Maine,” the survey said. “However, the strong quality of workforce and pleasant living environment are responsible for Maine’s improvement in the annual CEO survey.”

New Hampshire was the only New England state to rank above Maine at No. 24. Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts were among the 10 worst states for business, while Rhode Island avoided that grouping by four points.
