Changes afoot in Portland's art scene

James McCarthy June Fitzpatrick Gallery, located at 522 Congress St. in Portland, is closing in August due to the retirement of its 78-year-old owner — the latest of a series of changes in the city's gallery scene.

Portland’s art gallery scene is in flux, with one gallery being sold, another already closed and a third due to close in August.

The Portland Press Herald reported that June Fitzpatrick Gallery, a mainstay of the city’s arts district, is closing in August due to the retirement of its 78-year-old owner.

Maine College of Art, which owns the Fitzpatrick gallery space at 522 Congress St., is evaluating how it will use the space after the gallery closes, the newspaper reported.

The newspaper also reported the Susan Maasch Fine Art Gallery, located at 4 City Center, had closed in June, while the Greenhut Galleries, located at 146 Middle St., is being sold by its owner, Peggy Golden, for an undisclosed price to a married couple from California.

Greenhut Galleries’ new owners plan no major changes at the gallery in the Old Port, telling the newspaper they plan to retain the staff and the gallery’s roster of artists.
