Charter school and its fired founder head to court

The board of Portland's first charter school is taking its founder, John Jaques, to court over control of the school's website and other online property.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the Cumberland County Superior Court granted the school board a civil temporary restraining order Friday. At issue is ownership of the school's online material stored in a Google account and the school's Facebook page, over which Jaques has retained control.

An attorney representing Jaques said the charter school founder plans to file a defamation countersuit against the school, which fired him late last week. The paper reported that countersuit had not been filed as of 4 p.m. Monday. The school's lawsuit has been filed in Cumberland County Superior Court.

The paper reported that board members are worried the legal battle will distract from the school's plans to open in September. Prospective students must be notified of their right to enroll by April 1.
